Something beautiful is growing in Enkhuizen!
How does it grow again? In the Garden discovery garden, the general public is introduced to the growth and flowering of vegetables, flowers, and herbs. Before they are available as packaged products in supermarkets and garden centers. Back to the origins, back to fertile soil.
Do you remember what flowers, plants, and herbs look like before you buy them? Before they sit on the shelves of the supermarket, greengrocer, or florist, packaged in handy bags and packets, complete with labels and additives? We will show you. In the Garden, you will discover how vegetables, herbs, and garden plants grow and bloom in the field. Back to the basics of our food and the beautiful bunch of flowers in the vase. To emphasize the importance of our nature, to bring back the knowledge of yesteryear and the ‘forgotten’ vegetables, and to inspire you to build your own vegetable or flower garden.
Why the Garden?
Inspiration for your own garden
Garden enthusiasts gather ideas for planting, growing, and flowering vegetables, herbs, and flowers in their private gardens.
* Encourage healthy eating
By increasing visitors’ knowledge and inspiring them, we encourage the use of fresh vegetables and herbs with meals.
Encouraging school gardens
Knowledge of sowing, growing, and harvesting starts early. We are happy to encourage the use of school gardens. In the Garden, we test numerous varieties and crops for their suitability for school gardens.
Sharing knowledge from the industry
We proudly showcase the versatility of the assortment, the beauty of the plantings, and the constant innovation in cultivation and seed breeding.
Return forgotten vegetables
The past wasn’t necessarily better, but some vegetables we have forgotten deserve to return to the menu. Just like the knowledge of food preparation. Think, for example, of parsnips, broad beans, and Swiss chard.
You will find the vegetables, flowers, and herbs from the Garden in a beautifully situated garden just outside the moat near the Koepoort in Enkhuizen, on the site where the Zomertuin van Sluis en Groot was located for decades.
Opening hours
The Garden is open to the public on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Various themed days are also organized.
Keep an eye on the website and social media for more information.
