The story of the Garden

How does a broad bean actually grow? What does Swiss chard look like before it ends up on your plate? And what do flowers and herbs look like when they are still growing in the garden? In the Garden, you can discover it up close. In this discovery garden, vegetables, herbs, flowers, and garden plants grow just as you don’t see them in the supermarket: simply outdoors, from seed to mature plant. A place to look around, learn something new, and get ideas for your own garden.

The Garden takes you back to the origins of our food and shows how much variety can be found in nature. Familiar species stand alongside crops we have almost lost sight of, such as parsnips, broad beans, and Swiss chard. In this way, ancient knowledge and special vegetables remain alive.

There is plenty of inspiration for garden enthusiasts as well. View various varieties and plantings, discover how vegetables and herbs are grown, and see which types are suitable for a vegetable garden or school garden, for example. At the same time, you get a glimpse into the world of seed breeding and the development of new varieties.

The Garden is situated in a special spot just outside the moat, close to the Koepoort. For many years, the famous Summer Garden of Sluis and Groot was located here. A beautiful place where the horticultural history of Enkhuizen is still visible.
