Joseph Haydn – Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo
Intermezzo – Songs by Fanny Mendelssohn
Felix Mendelssohn – psalm 42 Wie der Hirsch writes
Felix Mendelssohn composed *Verleih uns Frieden* in 1831 to a text by Martin Luther. In this short choral work, a simple yet poignant plea for peace resonates. The warm harmonies and flowing melody give the music a serene power and make it a beloved work for choir.
Joseph Haydn wrote his sparkling Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo around 1775 for the Friars of Mercy in Eisenstadt. The warm sound and short duration earned the work the nickname ‘Little Organ Mass’. Compact and melodious, with a lyrical Benedictus, it will be performed on June 14 with piano accompaniment.
Psalm 42, Wie der Hirsch schreit nach frischem Wasser, opus 42 (1837), is Mendelssohn’s most extensive psalm composition with seven movements, and his personal favorite.
He started it during his honeymoon in the Black Forest, and the work therefore exudes happiness and a deep trust in the good.
