Spend the night in monumental greenery

Stay in a distinguished city villa from the 19th century.

The superintendent’s house of the Snouck van Loosenpark is currently occupied by
Ingrid Mol and her family. Whether they still have the keys to all the homes in the park, you can ask them yourself. In fact, part of the villa is set up as a B&B. How chic is that?

Staying in a distinguished city villa from the 19th century. Many of the classic details have been preserved. The elegant hall, richly decorated ceilings, stately staircases … And breakfast is served in the authentic kitchen.

A piece of history

As the last descendant of an Enkhuizer patrician family, Jonkvrouw Margaretha Maria Snouck van Loosen (1807-1885) decided to ‘return’ her entire family capital of some 8 million guilders to the city.
guilders ‘back’ to the city. Among other things, she had it recorded in her will
that there should be housing for ‘people who, despite continuous diligent labor
housing but do deserve it.

In 1893, 2.5 acres of land was purchased at the filled-in “New Harbor,” near the
outer harbor and the new train station built in 1885. Construction began and four years later one of the first social housing projects in the Netherlands was a fact. On June 17, 1897, the fifty houses in the then still tender green park were moved into. The rent was one and a half guilders per week, plus one guilder for the use of the gas-water-and-electricity facilities. Only workers who know how to behave properly qualify for housing. The superintendent, who himself lived in the nicest and largest building at the entrance to the park, had a key to each house so that he could go in, solicited or unasked, to check whether the residents complied with the housing rules. Those rules are quite strict; wallpapering yourself, for example, is out of the question. This is regulated by the foundation that renovates a different room in the house each year. Keeping pets is prohibited and public drunkenness results in immediate removal.
